Because Clinical Genomics is a relatively new field of medicine it is very important that we involve, include, communicate and understand the South Australian communities voice and thoughts on this area of healthcare. FAQ - Consumer Representative Steering Committee Member

What is a Consumer / Carer / Community Member?

Consumers and/or carers are people who use or are potential users of healthcare services. Consumers may participate as individuals, groups, organisations of consumers, consumer representatives or communities.

A Carer means a person who provides care and support for their parent, partner, child or friend who has a disability, is frail, or who has a chronic mental or physical illness. An individual is not a carer merely because he or she is the spouse, de facto partner, parent, guardian, child or other relative of an individual, or lives with an individual who requires care. Carers can include parents and guardians caring for children and children caring for parents and guardians.

What is a Statewide Clinical Network Steering Committee?

The Steering Committee will provide oversight of the development, implementation and evaluation of the network’s activities.

Steering Committee members will have a demonstrated passion for the clinical field, be strategic thinkers, excellent communicators and have the ability to influence change in service delivery.

The Steering Committee will be led by a Statewide Clinical Network Lead who will report to the Commissioner.

What time commitment is required?

Steering Committee meetings will initially occur monthly, but this may become less frequent as the Clinical Network becomes established. There may be other forums and planning sessions that members are asked to attend. Members may also be asked to contribute to working groups to progress time limited priority projects for the network. There is also likely to be some out-of-session work and actions that arise from meetings that members will need to contribute to.

How will the Steering Committees be supported?

Each Clinical Network will have a Statewide Clinical Network (SCN) Lead who will provide leadership to the network. The Commission on Excellence and Innovation in Health (CEIH) will provide a project manager for each network who will work closely with the SCN Lead and the Steering Committee to manage the overall program of work for the network. The CEIH will also have a supporting role in guiding the work of the network by providing expertise in clinical informatics and improvement methodologies. Administrative support will also be provided.

I haven’t been on a committee like this before. Can I still apply?

Yes! We welcome applications from those who are passionate about improving care for patients and have experience as a patient or carer relevant to the network.

What other opportunities will there be to be involved with the network?

The Steering Committee will be limited to approximately 8 to 12 members and we recognise that there will be many passionate and dynamic people who are not selected. There will be opportunities to participate in working groups, sub-committees and workshops that will be established to progress the work program developed by the Steering Committee.

Will I be paid for my time?

Yes. Consumer representatives on the Steering Committee members are eligible for sitting fees and reimbursement. The exception to this is if consumer representatives are attending on behalf of an organisation which they are employed by.

Can I apply if I live in a regional or rural area?

Yes. Membership will be constructed to reflect the necessary mix of knowledge, experience and skills to support the Statewide Clinical Network to fulfil its responsibilities. A balance of experience across metropolitan and rural settings and from within and out of hospital sectors will be sought.

Will teleconference or video conference be available for meetings?

Yes. The meeting format will be a combination of teleconference, video conference and face to face to support participation of members living in regional and rural areas and to comply with COVID-19 social distancing recommendations. It is the responsibility of members using these arrangements to ensure they are in a private location where information/discussions can remain confidential. Members are expected to attend at least 75% of meetings.
