Clinical registries are playing an increasingly important role in strengthening how healthcare is delivered across South Australia.
The Commission on Excellence and Innovation in Health (CEIH) is leading a statewide program of work to improve how clinical registries are developed, connected and used to support better outcomes for patients.
This work is part of our Priority Focus Area on data driven clinical decision-making, recognising the critical role of high-quality data in understanding variation in care, measuring outcomes and identifying opportunities for improvement.
Why clinical registries matter
Clinical registries bring together data on patient care and outcomes across services and organisations. When used effectively, they enable clinicians and health services to:
- understand variation in care and outcomes
- benchmark performance and identify gaps
- inform clinical decision making and service planning
- drive continuous quality improvement across the system.
Across South Australia, registries currently vary in their level of maturity, data standards and ability to connect with broader health systems. This presents both a challenge and a significant opportunity to strengthen their impact.
The clinical registries work is focused on building a more coordinated, consistent and sustainable approach to registries across South Australia.
The program brings together clinicians, consumers, data experts and system leaders to:
- improve the quality and consistency of registry data
- reduce duplication and fragmented approaches
- strengthen connections between registries and health information systems
- support better use of data for clinical care, research, planning and policy.
The work also focuses on strengthening governance and clinical leadership, supporting workforce capability and reducing reliance on manual data entry.
Building a learning health system
A key focus of this work is developing a statewide clinical registries roadmap. This roadmap will guide how South Australia establishes a sustainable and connected registry ecosystem that supports:
- integrated data across clinical systems and registries
- improved clinical care and patient outcomes
- systemwide learning and continuous improvement
- more effective planning, resource allocation and policy development.
Embedding registries more effectively into routine clinical practice, will support the transition to a more connected, learning health system, where insights from data translate into meaningful improvements in care.
This work is also being highlighted through the CEIH Improvement and Innovation Showcase Series 19, Improving Care Through Quality Insights, where clinical leaders and experts are sharing how registries are being used in practice to drive improvement.
Sessions explore topics such as governance, real-world applications, and how registry data can inform system level decision making and better outcomes for patients.
All sessions will be available for viewing on our Improvement and Innovation Showcase page after the series is over.
Looking ahead
This work represents a significant commitment to improve how data is used to better inform clinical decisions. By enhancing coordination, improving data quality and maximising the value of both new and existing registries, the program is laying the foundations for more informed, connected and high-value healthcare across the state.
