Population Health Registries and Information Systems move to CEIH

South Aus­trali­a’s Pop­u­la­tion Health Reg­istries (Can­cer and Preg­nan­cy Out­comes) and Infor­ma­tion Sys­tems teams are now part of the Com­mis­sion on Excel­lence and Inno­va­tion in Health (CEIH). The trans­fer brings reg­istry, ana­lyt­ics, infor­mat­ics and data exper­tise togeth­er with­in CEI­H’s Clin­i­cal Infor­mat­ics and Inno­va­tion Directorate. 

Respon­si­bil­i­ty for sev­er­al statewide reg­istries and col­lec­tions has trans­ferred from Pre­ven­tive Health SA, includ­ing the:

• South Aus­tralian Can­cer Registry
• Peri­na­tal Sta­tis­tics Collection
• Ter­mi­na­tion of Preg­nan­cy Collection
• South Aus­tralian Mater­nal and Peri­na­tal Mor­tal­i­ty Collection
• Data man­age­ment for the SA Trau­ma Registry.

The change strength­ens the con­nec­tion between pop­u­la­tion health data, clin­i­cal infor­mat­ics and statewide improve­ment ini­tia­tives. It also sup­ports a more coor­di­nat­ed approach to using infor­ma­tion and evi­dence to inform health­care plan­ning, pol­i­cy and ser­vice improvement.

Tina Hardin, Exec­u­tive Direc­tor, Clin­i­cal Infor­mat­ics and Inno­va­tion Direc­torate, said the tran­si­tion brings com­ple­men­tary exper­tise togeth­er under one directorate.

“Bring­ing these reg­istries and infor­ma­tion sys­tems exper­tise into the CEIH cre­ates crit­i­cal mass to bet­ter sup­port data dri­ven deci­sion mak­ing at all lev­els. It gives us greater oppor­tu­ni­ties to use high-qual­i­ty data to inform deci­sions and improve health out­comes for South Australians.”

The tran­si­tion also sup­ports sev­er­al CEIH strate­gic pri­or­i­ties, includ­ing the Pri­or­i­ty Focus Area Clin­i­cal Reg­istries project, the South Aus­tralian Com­pre­hen­sive Can­cer Net­work, and broad­er statewide clin­i­cal infor­mat­ics and dig­i­tal health initiatives.

While organ­i­sa­tion­al respon­si­bil­i­ty has changed, reg­istry oper­a­tions, data col­lec­tions and report­ing will con­tin­ue as usu­al. Exist­ing gov­er­nance, pri­va­cy and secu­ri­ty arrange­ments remain in place, with the CEIH assum­ing respon­si­bil­i­ty for reg­istry oper­a­tions, stew­ard­ship, gov­er­nance and custodianship.

The trans­fer marks a new chap­ter for these reg­istries and for Infor­ma­tion Sys­tems, bring­ing them into the CEIH while ensur­ing con­ti­nu­ity of the high-qual­i­ty data, gov­er­nance and report­ing that sup­port health­care across South Australia. 

The CEIH wel­comes the teams and will con­tin­ue its strong con­nec­tion with Pre­ven­tive Health SA.
