Workplace wellbeing is about creating the conditions that help people be healthy, safe and well at work.
It is influenced by a workplace’s physical environment, culture, leadership, relationships and the way work is designed and organised.
Our approach to wellbeing
South Australia’s healthcare workforce is facing challenges that affect workforce wellbeing, sustainability and the delivery of high-quality patient care.
That’s why the Commission on Excellence and Innovation in Health (CEIH) developed a system-wide approach to workplace wellbeing.
Our approach goes beyond supporting individual wellbeing. It focuses on strengthening the conditions that support wellbeing, reducing risks to wellbeing and embedding wellbeing into leadership, governance, work design and everyday practice.

Sustainable workplace wellbeing framework
Sustainable workplace wellbeing requires shared responsibility and action across multiple levels of the health system. This includes workers, managers, organisations and sector leaders.
The CEIH’s Sustainable Workplace Wellbeing Framework (PDF 217KB) identifies five areas for action:
- strengthen leadership and governance structures
- bring people and resources together
- use data to guide improvement
- build capability for effective and lasting change
- identify and design solutions with teams.
Using the framework
Our Building Workplace Wellbeing Guide (PDF 6MB) helps healthcare organisations embed wellbeing into their systems, structures and everyday practices.
The guide provides a practical, step-by-step approach to implementing the framework and helps:
- identify the factors that affect workplace wellbeing
- prioritise opportunities to improve workforce wellbeing
- design and implement effective solutions.
