Chronic Pain Statewide Clinical Network

Vision and goals

Vision

A strong, connected and inclusive community of practice which promotes evidence-informed prevention, early intervention and management of pain across the life span for all South Australians.

Goals

The Chronic Pain Statewide Clinical Network has been established to improve the provision of integrated, multidisciplinary care for people with chronic pain. It aims to:

  • Foster improved recognition and understanding of chronic pain and its effective management in the community
  • Foster systems development and transparent sharing of data to better support cross-sector service design, delivery and collaboration
  • Support improvements in community, primary health and hospital settings to ensure timely access to evidence-informed care for all South Australians living with pain
  • Build an integrated Community of Practice that optimises the experience and outcomes of chronic pain management.

Chronic Pain Statewide Clinical Network Steering Committee

The Steering Committees provide oversight of the development, implementation and evaluation of the networks’ activities.

The Steering Committees are constructed to reflect a balance of experience across metropolitan and country as well as from within and out of hospital sectors. The Steering Committee are led by a Statewide Clinical Network Lead.

Opioid Stewardship Working Group

The Opioid Stewardship Working Group comprises a multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to identify and discuss ways of improving the prescription and use of opioids across South Australian hospitals.

The group is considering data collection, communication, system changes and education as a means to improve the quality use of medication. For more information or to contact the group, please email ceih.chronicpain@sa.gov.au.

Current Projects and Collaborations

SA Reseach identifies key predictors of emergency department hospital presentations for low back pain

The CEIH-supported research in SA identified key factors influencing hospitalisation for non-specific low back pain in EDs. These findings help refine care and reduce hospital burden.

Optimal system of care for low back pain

We are enhancing care pathways for low back pain by improving treatment timeliness and appropriateness. Using data, evidence, and stakeholder input, we analyse clinical and system factors to identify opportunities for implementing the proposed model.

Research - Equipping the general public to prevent and overcome chronic pain (EQUIPP)

CEIH and the Chronic Pain Statewide Clinical Network is supporting research, led by University of South Australia, trialling a whole-of-community approach to improve access to evidence-based care for rural people living with chronic pain.

Adolescent Pain Services

Supported by grant funding and working with UniSA, Menzies Centre for Health Policy and Economics and other partners to co-design a community-based, multidisciplinary model of care for adolescents with chronic pain. This will ensure adolescents have better access to care in the community and will act as a pilot that can be used nationally.
